Sri Chamkaur Sahib, September 28 : A special literary and cultural function dedicated to the birth anniversary of Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh was organized by the Language Department Punjab at Malwa Rural Education Society, Bassi Gujran. During the function, various aspects of the personality, ideology and martyrdom of Shaheed Bhagat Singh were presented through Goshti, Kavi Darbar and songs and music.
Former IAS officer S. Kahan Singh Pannu attended the event as the chief guest, while Prof. Bawa Singh presided over the event. Advocate Sarabjit Singh Virk attended as the keynote speaker. The event began with the welcome speech of eminent thinker Dr. Kuldeep Singh.
The main speaker Advocate Sarabjit Singh Virk, while talking about the personality and ideology of Shaheed Bhagat Singh, said that it is very important to study the writings of Bhagat Singh to understand his real personality. He said that Bhagat Singh’s maternal and paternal grandparents were the elders of the family with progressive views and kept raising their voice against social evils as well as the black laws of the British government. These views naturally had an impact on Bhagat Singh’s personality.
He said that although Shaheed Bhagat Singh founded the Naujawan Bharat Sabha, he also had full respect for the leaders of his contemporary patriotic organizations and kept writing about them in newspapers and magazines. He said that Bhagat Singh also wore black turbans in protest against the massacres of Jallianwala Bagh and Nankana Sahib and also visited these historical places.
During the presidential address, Prof. Bawa Singh said that at the time when Bhagat Singh started jumping into the freedom movement and started gaining popularity among the people due to his ideology, Punjab started making its mark in the intellectual field as well, moving beyond the identity of wrestling. He said that it is worth considering that if the politics running the country had moved forward according to Bhagat Singh’s thinking, then many of the crises facing us today might not have arisen.
Chief Guest S. Kahan Singh Pannu said that Bhagat Singh is still an important reference point for the progressive thinkers of Punjab and his ideology is constantly being discussed. He said that a new form of capitalism is emerging in today’s India, out of which farmers, laborers and land are being deprived and its impact is being felt the most on the working class.
