Katli Fish Spawn Farm has given a new lease of life to fish farming, record-breaking production of 120 lakh fish spawns – Additional Deputy Commissioner
Rupnagar, September 16: The Punjab government is running various schemes to promote fish farming in the state and increase the income of farmers. The aim of these schemes is to connect farmers with modern methods of fish farming as well as provide them with necessary technical and financial support. In this direction, the government fish fry farm established in 25 acres of land at village Katli in district Rupnagar is playing an important role in providing high quality fish fry to the fish farmers.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (Development)-cum-Chairman Fish Farmer Development Agency Rupnagar Chandrajyoti Singh said that in order to further promote the fish farming profession in the district, the department is taking special efforts to connect farmers, unemployed youth and especially women with this profession. He said that fish farming is becoming a profitable and promising profession for farmers and by taking advantage of the facilities provided by the government, farmers can increase their sources of income.
He said that at present about 1800 acres of area is under fish farming in district Rupnagar. Financial assistance of 40 to 60 percent is being provided under Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana for various projects related to fish farming, such as construction of new fish ponds, re-circulating water system unit, biological pond unit, fish sale center, fish feed mill and two-wheelers and three-wheelers including ice boxes etc. Apart from this, financial assistance of up to 25 percent is also being provided for improvement and renovation of old fish ponds.
Chandrajyoti Singh said that awareness and training activities are also being continuously conducted by the department to extend the benefits of government schemes to maximum eligible beneficiaries. He said that five days of free training is provided every month at Fish Poong Farm Katli, during which information is given about modern techniques of fish farming, maintenance of ponds, fish feed and government facilities.
He appealed to farmers, unemployed youth and women to adopt fish farming as a profitable self-employment profession and take maximum benefit of the schemes being run by the government. He said that to get the benefits of government schemes, it is necessary to get registered with the National Fisheries Development Platform (NFDP).
He especially appealed that farmers, youth and women who are interested in starting the fish farming profession or getting government assistance related to it should participate in the five-day free training to be held at Fish Poong Farm, Katli from October 12, 2026 to October 16, 2026 and take advantage of this opportunity.
Assistant Director Fisheries-cum-Chairman Fish Farm Development Agency Rupnagar Karamjit Singh said that keeping in mind the increasing demand of fish farmers, a record 120 lakh fish fry have been produced by Fish Poong Farm, Katli so far. He said that this farm is providing fish fry to fish farmers of district Rupnagar as well as neighboring districts and neighboring states. He said that by adopting fish farming in the right way, fish farmers are getting a net profit of Rs. 1.5 lakh to Rs. 2 lakh per acre, due to which this profession is proving to be a profitable source of income for farmers.
Farm in-charge Tejinder Kaur said that at the government fish fry farm located in Katli, disease-free and high quality fish fry is provided to fish farmers from March to August at affordable rates. As per the demand of the farmers, fish fry of common carp, grass carp, rohu, katla and murakh etc. are supplied from here.
