A one-day training program was organized at Barsalpur village on seed treatment and balanced nutrient management in paddy.
Sri Chamkaur Sahib, May 18: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Ropar under the leadership of Directorate of Extension Education of Punjab Agricultural University and ICAR-Attari, Zone-1, Ludhiana organized a one-day training program on “Seed Improvement in Paddy and Basmati” at village Barsalpur of block Sri Chamkaur Sahib to create awareness among the farmers about Kharif crops.
This program was organized under the supervision of Associate Director (Training), KVK Ropar Dr. Satbir Singh. During this training program, Professor, Vegetable Science) Dr. Sanjeev Ahuja created awareness about home gardening of fruits and vegetables to ensure household nutritional security and promote consumption of healthy products.
Assistant Professor Plant Protection Dr. Urvi Sharma gave in-depth technical information on seed modification in paddy and basmati and demonstrated the correct method of seed modification to the farmers participating in the program. Farmers were made aware about the importance of seed modification in preventing seed and soil borne diseases in crops and in high crop production.
Apart from this, farmers were made aware about the monitoring and management of white-backed locust in paddy nurseries. Farmers were advised to constantly monitor the paddy nurseries and take timely and appropriate measures for locust control.
Assistant Professor, Soil Science Dr. Jagmanjot Singh Mann laid special emphasis on balanced and judicious use of fertilizers in paddy cultivation. He gave detailed information about the role of chemical fertilizers and micronutrients in paddy for crop growth and high yield. Farmers were advised to refrain from using DAP fertilizer in paddy under wheat-paddy crop rotation. Apart from this, they were encouraged to use organic, bio and chemical fertilizers in a balanced manner keeping in mind the unnecessary use of fertilizers and environmental balance. Farmers were also motivated to use green manure to reduce dependence on chemical fertilizers like urea. At the end of this program, sale of improved seeds of PAU and distribution of literature were also done among the farmers.
This training program was followed by a visit to the farm of S. Dalwinder Singh, a progressive vegetable grower of village Dhespura, who is successfully cultivating vegetables in an area of about six acres.
