Civil Surgeon Rupnagar issues advisory to refrain from selling energy drinks to children

Rupnagar, May 19: Civil Surgeon Rupnagar Dr. Raman Kumar Gupta has issued instructions to all food business operators, shopkeepers, canteens running near schools and those selling food and beverages in the district, asking them to refrain from selling energy drinks to children.
He said that the labels of energy drink products themselves carry a warning that they are not recommended for children, but still some food business operators are selling these products to young children, which can prove harmful to the health of children.
The Civil Surgeon said that energy drinks contain high amounts of caffeine and other stimulants, which can negatively affect the mental and physical development of children. Their excessive consumption can cause problems like lack of sleep, irritability, nervousness and difficulty concentrating in children.
He said that protecting the health of children is everyone’s shared responsibility and no negligence of any kind will be tolerated in this matter.
He directed all the food safety officers to conduct a checking campaign in their respective areas and ensure that products marked “Not Recommended for Children”, especially energy drinks, are not sold to children. If any shopkeeper or food business operator is found violating the instructions issued in this regard, appropriate action will be taken against him under the Food Safety and Standards Act.
Dr. Raman Kumar Gupta also appealed to parents to keep their children away from the use of energy drinks and motivate them towards healthy diet and natural beverages. He said that nowadays children are getting attracted towards energy drinks under the influence of advertisements and social media, but it is the responsibility of parents and teachers to make children aware of their harms.
